James W. PATTON, 80, retired Crawfordsville grocer and former Browns Valley postmaster, died Friday morning Nov 8, 1957 in Culver Hospital following a week's illness. Born Sept 7, 1877 at Browns Valley, Mr. Patton was the son of Thomas and Lucy Ann Davis Patton. He married Sarah Elizabeth Layne in 1896. He was a member of the Browns Valley Baptist Church. Mr. Patton who was in the grocery business 38 years, opened his first store in Browns Valley. Previously he served as postmaster at Browns Valley. In 1913, Mr. Patton moved to Waveland where he operated a grocery store until 1919 when he moved to Crawfordsville. He retired from active business in 1940 after operating a grocery in the 100 block of North Green Street, Crawfordsville. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Thomas Byrant of Cleveland, Ohio; five sons, Lloyd, Lester and Elbert Lee, of Crawfordsville; Leland of Indianapolis and Eugene of Danville, Ind; two brothers, Joe of Browns Valley and George of Lafayette two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Rice of Crawfordsville and Mrs. John Bayless of Browns Valley; 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He was a preceded in death by a daughter, Lucille Patton. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Hunt & Son Funeral Home at Crawfordsville. Burial was at Maple Ridge Cemetery near Waveland, Rev. Carlton Christenson officiated. - transcribed by kbz
